Federal prosecutors in Chicago have opened an antitrust inquiry into several major fertilizer manufacturers, including Northbrook-based CF Industries. Highly Concentrated Fertilizer Markets

The fertilizer industry has long drawn scrutiny due to its high level of market concentration. An analysis conducted by the Texas A&M Agricultural and Food Policy Center estimates the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI)—a common measure of market concentration—at approximately:

• 4,553 for phosphate fertilizers
• 3,455 for potash fertilizers

These figures fall well within the range economists and antitrust regulators consider highly concentrated markets. In addition, a relatively small number of companies control the majority of domestic production capacity.
