Defective Airbag LawsuitsNastLaw is currently investigating defective airbag lawsuits involving airbags manufactured by Takata Corporation that fail to deploy properly, and in some cases can explode and cause serious injury or death to vehicle occupants. Several major automobile manufacturers have issued airbag recalls for vehicles containing defective airbags.

The defective airbag recall is widespread, affecting vehicles from Toyota, Honda, Mazda, BMW, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors, made between 2000 and 2011.

The recall was issued because of a defect that can cause the airbags to inflate with too much force and even explode, sending dangerous shrapnel throughout the vehicle. These defective airbags have the potential to cause serious injury, and so far at least 4 deaths have been reported due to airbag explosions.

History of Defective Airbag Recalls

Production of the defective airbags has been traced back to 2002 and automakers and NHTSA may have known about the problem as early as 2004. Honda first noticed the defect in 2004 and again in 2007.  Each time, they alerted NHTSA of the problem but did not issue a recall, and NHTSA did not pursue any investigation into the potential for exploding airbags.
