What is Low Testosterone Treatment?

Testosterone therapy has become tremendously popular over the last decade as pharmaceutical companies and advertisers market the proposed benefits of low t treatment for aging males.

Major brands such as Testim, Axiron, AndroGel, and Androderm claim that their supplements in the form of gels, pills, patches, or injections, can treat everything from poor libido to loss of muscle mass.

However, there have been thousands of reports of these low testosterone treatments causing unwanted serious side effects such as heart attack, stroke, prostate cancer, and other serious cardiac events.

Low Testosterone Treatment Lawsuits

Thousands of men and their families who have been harmed by these treatments feel that they were not properly warned of the side effects and the potential dangers that were involved with low t treatment. Even though the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved these drugs, many men feel that they were diagnosed with a disorder that they did not have and encouraged to use testosterone as a means of treatment.

Furthermore, not only does testosterone therapy pose serious health consequences for men but also others who come in contact with the drugs, including women and children.

We believe that the manufacturers of these products did not adequately warn doctors and their patients of the increased risk for significant cardiovascular side effects and have been putting patients at risk of heart attack and stroke. By not including this critical safety information on warning labels, we believe the manufacturers of these prescription testosterone products may be liable for the injuries and wrongful deaths resulting from use of testosterone therapy.

Side Effects from Low T Treatment

Studies have shown a significant increase in cardiovascular-related side effects from prescription testosterone products including heart attacks, strokes, and blood clots.

One study, from the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) showed a 29% increase in risk among patients using prescription testosterone products. Another study published in the New England Journal of Medicine had to be stopped due to the high number of participants experiencing heart attacks and strokes.

Heart Attack from Low Testosterone Treatment

A study published in 2014 found that males aged 65 and older who were prescribed testosterone treatment increased their risk of heart attack by as much as two times compared with those who did not take testosterone. This same study concluded that men below the age of 65 with a known heart disease increased their risk of non-fatal heart attack twofold after beginning testosterone treatments.

Stroke from Low Testosterone Treatment

Stroke is another serious side effect that has been linked to testosterone treatment. According to studies completed by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), men who took testosterone were 30 percent more likely to suffer from strokes than those who were not given testosterone treatments.

Other Side Effects from Low T Treatment

Testosterone treatment has also been linked to blood clots, which can lead to deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism. A blood clot that forms in a deep vein, often in the leg, can cause the affected leg to swell or cause leg pain. If a DVT, or part of one, breaks away and gets into the bloodstream, it can block blood flow to the lungs, which is called a pulmonary embolism.

Low Testosterone Treatment FDA Warnings

In early 2014, the FDA began investigating the risk of stroke, heart attack, and death in males taking FDA-approved testosterone products. By June of 2014, the FDA issued a statement requiring manufacturers to include a general warning on all approved testosterone products about the risk of blood clots in the veins—also known as venous thromboembolism (VTE), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and pulmonary embolism (PE).

In March 2015, the FDA required manufacturers of all approved prescription testosterone products to change their labeling to clarify the uses of their testosterone products as well as include information about the possible increased risk of heart attacks and strokes in those who take testosterone treatments.
